2019 Estate Pinot Noir - Eden Rift
A temptingly plush yet weightless procession of blueberry, cranberry preserves, Bing cherry, pomegranate, and rhubarb pie lead a deep yet still lifted and lively display overlaid with gorgeously aromatic floral tones of lavender, rose, and potpourri. Notes of pine needle, forest floor, and tree bark tastefully impart waves of intriguing natural tones that intertwine with a diverse range of herbs and spices including tarragon, cinnamon, anise, sage, and thyme. Hints of sea salt and ocean air gently contribute suggestions of clean coastal terroir before concluding with impressive streaks of limestone-laden minerality. Strikingly high-toned, expansive, and expressive on the nose while remaining beautifully supple and delicate on the palate; exhibiting an approachable yet still age-worthy presentation that boasts enviable complexity and concentration without feeling overly dense or weighty. Medium bodied with soft yet persistent tannin supported by elevated acidity. This 2019 Estate Pinot Noir by Eden Rift is an elegant and exciting red from the Cienega Valley.
Located directly east of Monterey County along the eastern foothills of the Gabilan Mountains, the Cienega Valley of San Benito County is a historic yet still incredibly under-the-radar winegrowing region that is quietly putting out some of California's most exciting wine. This bottling, crafted by Eden Rift Vineyards using Pinot Noir sourced from their estate vineyards in the Cienega Valley, is an excellent example of the complexity and finesse that this cool climate region is capable of producing. This effortlessly spills a seductive mix of red and blue fruits layered with irresistible floral tones, pleasant forest notes, intriguing spices, and captivating coastal earthiness. Although enjoyable today this possesses the structure to age gracefully for at least 3-5 years, and beautifully represents the idyllic terroir from whence it came. Outstanding.
