2019 Funk Estate Vineyard Syrah - Big Table Farm

An extravagantly dense and saturated display dripping with crushed blueberry, blackberry cobbler, dark cherry preserves, and black licorice broods with rich and luscious concentration as sappy floral tones of violet oil, dried lavender, and pulverized rose further enhance perceived decadence. Hints of sagebrush, thyme, fennel, and mint swiftly materialize to impart a decidedly wild and herbal edge that boldly collides with a melange of exotic spices including cardamom, anise, and curry powder. Suggestions of sun-baked stones and freshly-poured asphalt boldy contribute rugged earthy qualities while notes of bitter cacao, black coffee, and charred red meat reveal layers of roasted and smoky delight. Immensely muscular and generous on the palate with excellent complexity to complement its serious ripeness and weight; exhibiting an exciting combination of pronounced fruit backed by interesting savory qualities that beautifully reflects its unique terroir. Medium-plus to full bodied with moderate tannin and balanced acidity. This 2019 Funk Estate Vineyard Syrah by Big Table Farm is a powerful and robust red from The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater.

Legendary for the abundance of palm-sized rounded river stones found widely across its landscape, the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater sits on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla Valley and regularly puts out some of the Pacific Northwest's most rich and concentrated wine. This bottling, crafted by Big Table Farm using Syrah sourced from the Funk Estate Vineyard in the Rocks District, is a textbook example of the unique flavor characteristics that have catapulted this region to worldwide fame. This booms with thick and juicy blasts of dark fruits pleasantly complicated by fresh herbs, deep floral tones, intriguing spices, and distinct stony earthiness. It is fairly approachable today yet should benefit from 3-5 years of additional cellaring, and will likely continue to drink well for at least a decade. Excellent.
