2013 Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot Noir - Morgan Winery
Brilliantly expansive yet elegant eruptions of dried dark cherry, tart boysenberry, candied orange peel, and strawberry compote lead an intriguing and irresistibly developed flavor profile seamlessly layered with gorgeous natural notes of forest floor, bramble, peat moss, and wild mushroom. Hints of seaweed, plucked feathers, and aged leather further advance absolutely captivating streaks of gamy umami that are pleasantly offset by pronounced floral tones of dried rose petal, lavender, and potpourri. A dusting of coriander, cinnamon, and caraway seed highlights a diverse array of spices that rise above clean earthiness highlighted by ocean fog, crushed rocks, and saline minerality. Incredibly aromatic and lifted on the nose while coming across as equally as expressive, multidimensional, and characterful on the palate; exhibiting a modern yet still delightfully Burgundian presentation that is complex and cerebral while remaining softly textured and magnificently seductive. Medium bodied with moderate and largely resolved tannin backed by bright acidity. This 2013 Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir by Morgan Winery is a world class and terroir expressive red from the Santa Lucia Highlands.
Planted in 1996 by Santa Lucia Highlands viticultural legends Gary and Rosella Franscioni, Rosella's Vineyard is one of Monterey County's most iconic vineyard sites and has established a reputation as one of the Central Coast's best places to grow Pinot Noir. This bottling, crafted by Morgan Winery using Pinot Noir sourced from Rosella's Vineyard, showcases this site's propensity to shape wine that is delicious both in its youth and with bottle age. This generously spills endless layers of dark and red fruits complicated by nicely tertiary forest tones, pretty florals, light gaminess, lifted spices, and coastal earthy charm. Though it is now in its prime drinking window there should be no rush to consume this, as it likely has at least another 3-5 years of its peak remaining. Wow.
